  The article focuses on a study in which a silicon-based photonic crystal device was fabricated by researchers that exhibited picomolar sensitivity in analyzing microliter aliquots of pepsin and produced a rapid response visible to the eye. The transmission of specific wavelengths of light was blocked by photonic crystals through periodical alternation of high-refractive-index solid regions and low-refractive-index pores.
