- Abstract:
The article profiles zoologist Erich Jarvis, whose research into the speech of zebra finches may help us understand how the human brain works to make speech. Jarvis wonders why so few animals have developed speech and postulates that variation in speech patterns make them more recognizable to predators. Jarvis began his life as a dancer, graduating from the High School of the Performing Arts and performing with the Ballet Afrique. He compares the creativity and hard work of dance to that required in scientific research.
