- Abstract:
The article focuses on the mistreatment of U.S. prisoners of war in the British prison ships. The hulks were freezing in winter and stifling in summer which helped incubate lice and diseases in the overcrowded conditions . Artist John Trumbull portrayed the prisoners like the 20th-century concentration camp inmates, receiving only two-thirds of British seamen's rations and a pint of fresh water daily. The prisoners' suffering ended with the 1783 Treaty of Paris and the conclusion of the war.
