      The article reports on criticism of Blackboard Inc., the software company that has become the dominant course-management provider, concerning a patent the company was awarded in January 2006. The author discusses the reactions of higher education administrators and others to a lawsuit against rival software company Desire2Learn Inc., which was filed in August 2006, for alleged patent infringement. The article features comments by representatives at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit watchdog group, and from several colleges and universities.
