      The article argues that rock music fits into pre-existing discourses on the role of cultural forms in Chinese society. An analysis of mainland Chinese academic and popular print media from the current period of political and economic reform which began in the 1970s was used to demonstrate that Chinese media constructions of rock music have been preceded by similar constructs of popular music forms.
