The article offers a look at the benefits of small houses. American writer Henry Thoreau tucked himself into a small house on Walden Pond in the 1840s and thousands of earthquake cottages were built in San Francisco for survivors of the 1906 earthquake. Current home buyers are motivated by the desire to simplify their lives, use fewer resources and save money. Architects and small-home designers such as Geoffrey Warner of Alchemy Architects, Marianne Cusato and Dennis Fukai draw inspiration from the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, squatter cottages in Chile, and a Japanese teahouse.
