The article focuses on new genetic evidence that white spruce trees endured the harsh climate of Alaska throughout the last ice age, 25,000-12,000 years ago. Lynn L. Anderson, a plant geneticist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, conducted research with colleagues which found seven genetic variations in white spruce in Alaska, more than would likely occur if the plant repopulated Alaska just 12,000 years ago.
