      The article discusses the effects of pictures on the thinking of students regarding American identity and history. Pictures allow the students to deepen their learning and critical skills and at the same time challenges them to understand and read the images. Pictures, which force the students to question their sense of nationality are also presented. Photographs from the 1960's, which usually generate powerful emotions and was a major issue are presented. It includes the burning of the Buddhist monk, Thich Quang Duc in South Vietnam, fire horses and civil rights movements, feminism and protest at the Miss America Pageant and the black power and student protestors at Cornell University.
