- Abstract:
A definition of the term "innate immune response" is presented. It refers to the inborn, antigen-independent immune response that represents the initial effort to contain a disease-causing agent prior to the onset of the antigen-specific adaptive immune response. Innate immunity is present in all individuals but unlike the adaptive immune response mediated by B cells and T cells it does not improve or adapt to a pathogen.
