    • Abstract:
In this article the author, a Nobel laureate in economics, discusses the concept of human identity and the link between identity and violence. He shows how a person's sense of belonging to a particular ethnic, religious or social group can, in certain circumstances, lead them to otherwise unthinkable violence. In this article the author recalls how witnessing a murder as a child in India first made him aware of the 'violence of identity'.
