    • Abstract:
In the name of what have been identified and counted the American Indians ? This paper is based on census carried out in 2000 and 2001 in the United States, in Mexico and in Bolivia. Describing some of the battles induced by the Indians' reckoning, the authors emphasize their indissoluble links with politics and public policy. Basically they suggest that categories such as ethnicity and culture - who seems to be great scientific strides - have changed census into traps as they introduce wrong classifications, back up preconceived opinions and may give rise to conflicts. • Abstract:
