    • Abstract:
The article reports on a statement against the use of torture by the U.S. military and security forces endorsed by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture in an advertisement in the June 13, 2006 issue of "The New York Times." Religious leaders had been concerned by news reports of violations by soldiers in Iraq and jailers at Guantanamo prison in Cuba and of the U.S. transfer of some detainees to countries known to use torture in questioning prisoners. According to the statement, torture degrades both perpetrators and victims. Signers to the statement included author-pastor Rick Warren, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.
