The article reports on the use of Internet Protocol softphones, a personal computer-based Voice-over Internet Protocol software, in companies in the U.S. According to the report,. the telephony software on personal computers has been around since the 1990s, but the emergence of Skype and the wider adoption of broadband have made the technology more accessible and familiar than ever. Several companies have been supporting pockets of softphone users or even large divisions of traveling employees with the technology. Steve Lydston, network manager for Nissan North America, has stated that deploying softphones on the notebook computers of executives traveling abroad provides measurable cost savings.
