- Abstract:
The article discusses the effects of smoking tobacco on measurements of forced expiratory volume (FEV) and diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The author points out that the often used statistic that only about 15% of smokers suffer from COPD is probably taken from a study published in 1976 entitled "The Natural History of Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema." However, by today's standards, the men in the study would be considered to have moderate COPD which would require medical attention and treatment. Analysis of data from participants in the Copenhagen City Heart Study shows that the distribution of FEV shifts as a function of smoking dose. The implication is that eventually all smokers will have measurable reduced function.
