      The article focuses on the author's views on plastic surgery in Colombia. The author has had experience as a plastic surgeon in different regions around the world as part of Operation Smile International. He views that one of the major factors that contributes to the lack of organisation and desire to help patients who require reconstructive surgery and microsurgery' is the structure of the public-health and insurance system in Colombia. In the major cities there are plastic surgeons trained in sub-specialties such as craniofacial and hand surgery and microsurgery. But there are not enough of them to cover the needs of the whole population.
