The article discusses talent-based leadership in military healthcare in the U.S. A talent-based leadership for a leadership position based on ability and not necessarily seniority or rank was implemented in August, when the senior medical officer and medical administration officer reported on board an aircraft carrier for a two-year tour. A Petty officer was replaced with a sailor trained as an independent-duty corpsman who had eight deployments under his belt, five with various Fleet Marine Force units and three with the surface Navy. It worked because the brunt of the burden was shouldered by enlisted personnel, rather than from an armchair warrior inside an office. This style of leadership was established for every division within the department.
