      This article is a report on the activities of the Taliban in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan and on the Canadian military mission to defeat them. The Taliban's control of the Kandahar region is extensive and their strict Islam is welcomed in many quarters. The author examines the difficulty of the task facing the Canadian troops, noting that the Pashtun tribes of Kandahar have never been defeated by outsiders. Taliban soldiers interviewed insist that Canadian forces will not achieve victory.
