    • Abstract:
The article reports that a coalition of U.S. organizations opposes the plan of AOL to implement a fee-based e-mail service. The e-mail service will be based on the technology of Goodmail Systems and will assure the authenticity of the message-sender. The service appears to have benefits for financial institutions and organizations that send and received critical data. However, Danny O' Brien, activist coordinator of Electronic Frontier Foundation, likened the plan to an e-mail tax and claimed that it would divide the Internet into two classes of users-- those who get preferential treatment and those who do not.
