    • Abstract:
The article discusses developments in fiber optic sensing technology. Fiber-sensor networks can perform the functions of virtually any conventional sensor, often faster and with greater sensitivity. Fiber optic sensors can function under adverse conditions of temperature and pressure. They are useful as sensing devices for a wide range of physical and chemical phenomena. Fiber-Bragg-grating sensors are the most commonly used in civil engineering because they can measure physical changes as well as organic elements. They also offer excellent resolution and range, absolute measurement and modest cost per channel.
