- Abstract:
The 44 different species of shieldtails are all named after their unusual tails. A shieldtail's tail looks as if it has been cut smoothly with a knife. It is flat and slanted at an angle like the bottom of a cut flower. Scientists suspect that shieldtails use their specially-designed tails to block the entrances of their burrows.
