      This article seeks to investigate the history of recycling and reuse of household cast-offs in Great Britain. The characteristic forms of recycling in early modern Britain are mentioned. The most notorious of the nineteenth-century waste trades are cited. The impact of the First World War on the British perception of waste is noted.
