- Abstract:
The article focuses on the 1991 Persian Gulf War. As U.S. military presence in the Middle East grew, so did international pressure on Iraq. At the end of 1990, Operation Desert Shield evolved in an effort to drive Iraq's forces out of Kuwait. The coalition air campaign dropped bombs and missiles on key Iraqi military targets. On January 17, 1991, Iraq responded to the coalition air attack by launching Scud missiles at Israel. The U.S. air campaign continued, including an attack on an air raid shelter in Baghdad that killed nearly 300 people. Following Saddam Hussein's refusal to leave Kuwait, the ground war began. Coalition troops swept from Saudi Arabia into Kuwait and parts of Iraq. On February 27, 1991, U.S. President George Bush declared that Kuwait had been liberated.
