    • Abstract:
The article focuses on Australian historian Derek Freeman's criticism of the work of noted anthropologist, Margaret Mead. Freeman sought to persuade his colleagues that Mead's path breaking work on Samoa was fundamentally misbegotten. Freeman was convinced that Mead had been duped into believing that Samoa was a sexual Shangri-La. The question of Freeman's mental health and its role in his scholarly work is not new to close observers of the battle over Mead and her legacy.
