    • Abstract:
The article focuses on how to prevent threats of mutilation and theft in libraries. The types of theft and human damage to library collections are discussed. Strategies to forestall theft include the lessening of opportunities for secrecy, warning about consequences and regulation of the use of items, checkout procedures and exit portals. Ways are suggested to help a library decide what measures to adopt and how much to spend, and how to recover stolen items.
