This article addresses the problems associated with computer software piracy. According to Samantha Kandah, group manager for antipiracy at Adobe Systems, utilizing counterfeit software leads to corrupted data or malfunctioning systems. It may also contain computer viruses which may subject users to financial fraud. In a global piracy study conducted by research firm IDC and the Business Software Alliance, the global spending on counterfeit, packaged computer software in 2004 was about $3 billion. The BSA also inferred that most U.S. consumers receive counterfeit software offers daily via e-mail spam and that nearly 40 percent of software sold online are illegitimate.
