      The article presents information about Vatican City. The popes for many centuries, with brief interruptions, held temporal sovereignty over mid-Italy comprising an area of some 16,000 Square mile, with a population in the 19th century of more than 3 million. The sovereignty of the pope being confined to the palaces of the Vatican and Lateran in Rome and the villa of Castel Gandolfo, by an Italian law of May 13, 1871. The principal languages of the country are Latin, Italian, French, and Monastic sign. Roman Catholic is the chief religion of the country.
