- Abstract:
The article focuses on Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is under criminal investigation. Abramoff has been discussing a deal with prosecutors that would grant him a reduced sentence in exchange for testimony against former political and business associates. He is thought to have knowledge of what prosecutors suspect is a broader pattern of corruption among lawmakers and Congressional staff members. What began as an inquiry into Indian casino lobbying by Abramoff and partner Michael Scanlon has expanded into a corruption investigation of mainly Republican lawmakers. Top party officials, including former House majority leader Representative Tom Delay, are under scrutiny.
