    • Abstract:
The author comments on American cinema in 2005. In September, audiences saw the release of a number of modestly budgeted but intriguingly designed pictures. There was "Capote," with Philip Seymour Hoffman, George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck," David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence," Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale," "Brokeback Mountain," with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Woody Allen's "Match Point."It is a worthy group of brave ventures. The year 2005 could be seen as a turning point, when big studios began seeking small, intelligent, provoking stories.
