- Abstract:
The article reports that a University of South Florida professor, Sami Arian, was found not guilty on eight of the 17 counts against him, in regard to raising funds for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). The federal jury remains deadlocked on the other nine--so Mr Arian, a conspicuously fierce critic of American policy in the Middle East and of Israel, will stay in prison while the government considers a retrial. Two of Mr Arian's fellow defendants, Sameeh Hammoudeh and Ghassan Ballut, were found not guilty on all counts, while a third, Hatem Fariz, got off on 25 charges, but with the jury deadlocked on another eight.
