The new Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is allowing his deeply held religious beliefs to guide his government. Iran had been reforming under the previous government, and critics fear that the new president's fundamentalism could be harmful to the country. Ahmadinejad has replaced reformist ambassadors and experienced weapons negotiators with inexperienced men who support his religious and social programs. Elites mock the president but his religiosity has been successful in Iran.
