    • Abstract:
The article focuses on difficult doctors, who may be arrogant, rude or dismissive, driving away patients who need help. Medical organizations in the U.S. say they fear such doctors are increasingly common. Doctors, under pressure to see more patients, are spending less time with each one and replacing discussions with laboratory tests and scans. Most problem doctors seem to have no idea of their patient opinions of them. Patients do not usually confront doctors. Now some medical groups are taking steps to address the problem, questioning patients and withholding bonuses of doctors who get poor ratings. INSET: Making the Most of a Brief Office Visit.
