- Abstract:
The article focuses on Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, one of Britain's most eminent living composers. The revival of his opera "The Mines of Sulphur," which he wrote 40 years ago, was a sensation at Glimmerglass, New York, and with the New York City Opera. Bennett says the piece liberated him from the musical introversion he learned from avant-garde composers. The opera is dedicated to Benjamin Britten. Among Bennett's scores are "Murder on the Orient Express," the BBC production of Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast," and "Four Weddings and a Funeral."
