The article presents a snapshot of the European automotive aftermarket. While Germany is one of Europe's largest retail aftermarkets in value terms, it is a market in decline. Over five years from 2003 to 2007, it is expected to decline at 1.2% year on year, leaving it worth an estimated 43.2 billion euros by the end of that period. This decline reflects the tough trading conditions facing the wider German automotive industry, which is not helped by weak German consumer demand. By contrast, Italy--a far smaller market in value terms but still among the bigger aftermarkets in Europe overall--should record a growth in value of 0.8% per annum to 2007.
