    • Abstract:
This article features children's book author Patricia Martin. Reared in the midwest, she created many of her stories from childhood memories of her grandfather's farm in Kansas. She began writing stories and poems at a very young age. She attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie and taught school for four years in Colorado and Wyoming. She moved to San Mateo, California, in 1942. Her career as a writer began by chance. She had planned to take an upholstery class at the College of San Mateo, California. Due to full enrollment, she took creative writing instead. A year later, her first book, Sylvester Jones and the Voice in the Forest, was published.
