    • Abstract:
This article profiles author Janice May Udry. She was reared as an only child in the rural town of Jacksonville, Illinois. As soon as she learned to read and write, reading, making up stories and poems, and drawing pictures became favorite pastimes. Playing on hot summer nights in Illinois later inspired her to write The Moon Jumpers in 1959. She was awarded with the ALA Caldecott Medal in 1957 for A Tree Is Nice.
