    • Abstract:
This article profiles William Earl Johns, English author and illustrator. Johns was born on February 5, 1893 in Hertfordshire and died on June 21, 1968 in Middlesex, England. Service for Great Britain during World War I became the core of experiences from which Johns would draw much of his writing for children. His early writing for Popular Flying, an aviation journal, gave rise to the character James Bigglesworth, a young pilot readers met in many of Johns's works for children.
