This article discusses research being done on the effect of varicella vaccination on the incidence of hospitalization due to chickenpox in the U.S. in 2002., that was published in the August 17, 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study shows hospitalizations dropped by 88 percent from the prevaccination period and ambulatory visits declined by 59 percent. The greatest declines were among infants younger than 1 year old. The study includes enrollees of more than 100 health insurance plans of about 40 U.S. employers.
