- Abstract:
This article provides information on the American Samoa. The two Samoas, Western and American, are located in the middle of the South Pacific. American Samoa is the eastern group, consisting of seven volcanic islands and atolls. Measured by balance of trade, American Samoa has a prosperous economy. There are tuna canneries in Pago Pago and a fleet of tuna fishing boats. Tourism is being pushed by the government. Currently visitors number only about 12,000 per year. The rapid development of American Samoa in the nineteen sixties has led to many problems. The old and valued social system is breaking down. Crime and juvenile delinquency are now major problems, especially in Tutuila.
