This article presents information on the South Carolina Oyster Industry: A History, a document prepared by Victor G. Burrell Jr. Burell was involved with shellfish activities while with the Marine Resources Research Institute of the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department. He was the Institute's Director from 1974 to 1991. After retiring in 1991, he continued to take an active role in South Carolina's marine resources, including coauthoring numerous scientific and lay review publications. Burrell's historical accounting of the industry began with a glossary of common terms utilized by the growers. He shares with the reader that the oyster industry was the most valuable South Carolina fishery from the late 1880s to just after World War II.
