- Abstract:
A recent study conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center focused on assessing end-organ damage among elderly patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The research found that patients with SCA often experience multiorgan failure, leading to a shorter lifespan compared to the general population. The study included 16 SCA patients aged 60 and older, predominantly female and of African or African American ethnicity, with evidence of end-organ damage affecting multiple systems. The findings suggest that disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) and hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) may help manage end-organ outcomes in this cohort. [Extracted from the article]
