Effects of Inter-Dialysis Cognitive and Physical Training on Cognitive Abilities and Physical Performance. (English)
    • Abstract:
Hemodialysis patients are often physically inactive and have lower performance levels compared to the general population. They frequently also experience cognitive impairments. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of inter-dialysis cognitive training combined with physical exercise on cognitive abilities and physical performance in the hemodialysis population. There were 44 patients included in the study. They were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 22), which performed inter-dialysis cycling and cognitive training three times a week, or a control group (n = 22), which received standard care. The intervention lasted 12 weeks. Its effects were measured using the timed up and go test (TUG) and the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT). Forty-two patients completed the study. The experimental group showed improvement compared to the control group in the TUG (p = 0,005) and SDMT test (p < 0,001). A shorter time to complete the TUG test was associated with a better result in the SDMT (r = -0,497, p = 0,001). The results indicate that combination of inter-dialysis exercise and cognitive training can improve physical performance and cognitive abilities, presenting opportunities for further research and the development of better treatment guidelines for haemodialysis patients. • Abstract:
