- Abstract:
The article reports on certain political developments in the United States during the tenure of U.S. Supreme Court chief justice Morrison Remick Waite. Although the tenure of chief justice Morrison Waite was relatively short, it occurred during a significant period for the Supreme Court. The United States was growing rapidly, spurred westward by the expansion of railroads. A set of civil rights cases brought under the Civil Rights Act of 1875 were consolidated into one ruling under the Civil Rights Cases. The Civil Rights Act had made it unlawful to discriminate against people in public places such as hotels, theaters, and trains.
