    • Abstract:
A study presented at the American College of Chest Physicians Annual Meeting in 2024 found that patients with refractory cough associated with interstitial lung disease experienced relief with the traditional Chinese medicine semen strychni. Derived from the plant Strychnos nux-vomica L., semen strychni contains strychnine, a toxic component known for its central nervous system agonist properties. The study showed significant improvement in patient-reported outcomes, including reduced cough and improved quality of life, with no major adverse effects reported. However, experts caution that more systematic studies are needed to understand dosage characteristics and pharmacokinetics before considering semen strychni as a mainstream therapy for chronic cough.
