- Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to observe the changes in social factors and transportation in the local area on the decision women workers to commute in Indonesia. This article used marginal effect analysis to observe the probability of women workers' choosing their work trip. The contribution of this article is to add the literature on the understanding of social factors, transportation, and commuting in economic studies, especially on women in labor supply. We used secondary data from Indonesian National Workers Force Survey (SAKERNAS) 2018 by the Central Statistics Agency which provided basic data of commuter workers in Indonesia and Village Potential data (PODES) provided data on socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia. Our findings state that, overall, the changes in social factors and transportation factors affect commuting decisions by 78%. Social factors, i.e., the presence of neighbors through mutual cooperation and women's communities, reduce the probability of women commuting by an average of 3.86% and 15%, respectively. However, on the other hand the facilities by public transportation variable will increase the women to commute by 2.3%, controlled by region, sectoral work, high income, education and age.
