- Abstract:
Archaeologists have recently discovered over 100 previously unknown megasites in Europe, specifically in the southern Pannonian Plain north of the Danube. These sites date back to the Late Bronze Age, around 1600 to 1050 BC, and were home to large, fortified settlements that could sprawl over hundreds of acres. The discovery challenges previous beliefs about this period, which was thought to be a cultural collapse. The megasites may have been a response to climate change and intensive land use, and the people who lived there may have participated in a dense trade network and engaged in organized warfare. The findings shed new light on the civilization that existed in the heart of Europe during this time. [Extracted from the article]
