- Abstract:
Researchers from the Federal University Rio de Janeiro have published a new study on alphaviruses, specifically Chikungunya (CHIKV) and Mayaro (MAYV) viruses. These viruses are known to cause chronic skeletal muscle atrophy, leading to an inflammatory muscle-articular disease. The study used a mouse model to investigate the impact of viral replication and inflammation on skeletal muscle composition, structure, and repair. The findings suggest that alphavirus infections can have long-term effects on skeletal muscle and provide insights into potential therapeutic targets. [Extracted from the article]
