- Abstract:
Switzerland's Gotthard tunnel, the longest railroad tunnel in the world at 57 kilometers, has fully reopened after a 13-month closure due to repairs following a train derailment in August of the previous year. The tunnel is a crucial north-south link for Switzerland and Europe, accounting for about 10% of the goods that cross the Alps each year. Its reopening will shorten travel times between Zurich and Milan by about one hour and increase capacity for freight trains. The repair works and losses from the closure cost 150 million Swiss francs. [Extracted from the article]
