The construction of Afrikaans masculinity in magazines: A focus on sexuality. (English)
- Abstract:
The article explores the construction of Afrikaans masculinity in relation to sexuality, examining constructions in Afrikaans magazines between 2005 and 2015, as investigated in my PhD study. Gender relationships are influenced by political, social, and economic changes while gender, as a social construct, undergoes continuous transformation. Magazines play a crucial role in shaping new masculinities by highlighting various expressions of masculinity and contributing to the discourse on gender and sexuality. The study employs a social constructivist approach and follows a multimodal critical discourse analysis. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of Afrikaans masculinity in Afrikaans magazines regarding sexuality. In conclusion, I identify three elements in the construction of Afrikaans masculinity related to sexuality which are unique to the Afrikaans community: (1) adherence to strict monogamy within heterosexual relationships, (2) promotion of obligatory heterosexuality and (3) the absence and disapproval of homosexuality, reinforcing heteronormativity. Afrikaans masculinity aligns with global categories of masculinities by firstly portraying men in dominant positions within heterosexual relationships. Secondly, the importance of emotional well-being and social maturity for successful relationships, are emphasised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
