    • Abstract:
The legal industry in Hong Kong is facing challenges, with top tier firms closing, foreign lawyers leaving, and fewer trainees being retained. Factors contributing to this decline include a lack of large initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions, an economic downturn in China, concerns about data privacy and China's influence, and the national security legislation. The number of law firms leaving or shutting down has increased, and there has been a decline in the number of foreign lawyers and junior lawyers being hired. However, industry associations attribute the decline to poor economic conditions rather than political fears. Despite these challenges, Hong Kong's legal hub status is expected to be retained due to its common law jurisdiction and strong legal fundamentals. [Extracted from the article]
