The nearly 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara in Egypt may have been built using a hydraulic system, according to Xavier Landreau and his colleagues. They propose that controlled flows of water into and out of a large shaft inside the pyramid lifted and lowered a platform that carried stones to higher levels. However, some archaeologists are skeptical of this hypothesis, arguing that there is not enough evidence to support it and that it would have required more effort than simply moving the stone blocks manually.
